Mining Cadastre Addresses Protestant University of Congo in Kinshasa
The Director General of the Mining Cadastre, Mr. Popol MABOLIA YENGA, delivered a keynote address at a conference organized by the student structure “Agora Juridique” at the Protestant University of Congo (UPC) on April 19, 2024.
The conference, themed “The mining sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo: challenges and prospects,” aimed to educate law students about the intricacies of the mining industry and foster dialogue on its future.
Mr. MABOLIA emphasized the need for the younger generation to familiarize themselves with the mining sector and the Mining Code, urging them to prepare to reclaim control of industrial mining to drive the country’s development.
He also pledged financial support for students conducting research on mining-related issues, envisioning their contributions to finding concrete solutions to sectoral challenges.
Highlighting the discrepancy between artisanal and industrial mining performance, Mr. MABOLIA underscored the imperative for Congolese youth to take a proactive role in revitalizing the industrial mining sector, which currently faces significant challenges.
During the conference, other speakers, including Professor Jivet NDELA KUBOKOSO and Mr. Cyrille MUTOMBO, addressed various topics related to the mining sector, such as the impact of the 2018 Mining Code on local communities and the stigma associated with the industry.
Professor NDELA highlighted the legal advancements of the 2018 Mining Code, while Mr. MUTOMBO emphasized the collective responsibility in ensuring sustainable development.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to participating students, marking the successful collaboration between the Mining Cadastre and “Agora Juridique” in promoting dialogue and engagement on critical mining sector issues among future legal professionals.
